Meet Paul
Paul grew up on Charleston’s West side, graduated from Stonewall Jackson High
school and was a member of the high school’s Championship Football team. After
graduation he had the privilege of playing football under head Coach Bobby Bowden at
West Virginia University.
Paul began his career at the West Virginia Division of Highways with 13 years as an
equipment operator, then a surveyor, before entering an apprenticeship with IBEW
Local 466 and worked as a journeyman electrician for nearly 30 years.
Public service has always been part of Paul’s life. His father, Jim Monroe, served on
Charleston City Council for 18 years, and his mother, Rosemary Monroe, was a clerk in
the Kanawha County Assessor’s Office for 30 years. His brother is a union carpenter, a
retired Charleston firefighter and a member of the Charleston WV Professional
Firefighters IAFF Local 317. Paul served on Charleston City Council for four years in
2003.
Through the course of his career, Paul worked on plants at Carbide Island, Institute,
John Amos and the Kanawha River facility in Glasgow, as well as on construction for
the original Corridor G project, among others.
In his retirement, he continues to do electrical work for local elderly residents in need,
and volunteers to help neighbors and friends throughout the county.
Paul’s work throughout his life reflects his continued interest in, and concern for, the
success of the community. Currently, a particular focus of his is the pressing need for
infrastructure improvements throughout Kanawha County. Without clean water, proper
sewage systems, passable roads and efficient communication networks, a community
cannot thrive, and Paul believes that as a county commissioner, he can work to ensure
that any barriers to such improvement projects are addressed. As your county
commissioner, Paul Monroe will constantly seek your input on what needs to be done to
ensure Kanawha County remains a great place to live, work and raise a family.
